Anti-Wear/Anti-Corrosion Under Pipe Supports (UPS)

General Information

The under pipe support was designed in consultation with piping/corrosion engineers to provide a simple, inexpensive, easy to install means of protecting process pipes on pipe racks.

The simplicity and effectiveness of this product has produced rapid acceptance by piping engineers who recognise it as an effective means of eliminating pipeline corrosion problems and expensive maintenance.

Three versions of the Under Pipe Support have been developed to suit a wide range of conditions, pipeline temperatures and client preferences:
For a broader description see the Product Description Notes.

Type A – Factory fitted narrow strip of adhesive for initial bonding during installation. Secondary adhesive to be applied according to clients requirements.

Type B – Factory fitted with full width of adhesive.

Type C – Supplied without adhesive for fitting using client’s choice of adhesive.

UPS are an anti-wear support and insulating block fitted between pipe and pipe rack to prevent corrosion caused by:

  •   Wear from thermal movement

  •   Galvanic action between dissimilar metals

  •   Moisture build up

To date, ASEplas Anti-Wear/Anti-Corrosion Under Pipe Supports have been utilised in the following Market sectors:

  •   Ethylene and general petrochemical plants

  •   Bulk pharmaceutical plants

  •   Offshore oil and gas platforms

  •   Onshore gas processing plants

  •   Refineries

  •   Liquid natural gas (LNG) plants

Product Application Notes
Under Pipe Supports are supplied in three configurations designated Type A, Type B and Type C.

Type A are supplied pre-fitted with an adhesive tape down the centre section of the curved surface. This adhesive tape is intended to effect initial bonding to the pipe during installation with the edge gap being filled with a secondary two part adhesive system according to the fitting instructions.
Type A products are intended for general use with the specified secondary adhesive system, where frequent and or significant movement between pipe and rack is anticipated.

Type B are supplied pre-fitted with an adhesive tape over all the curved surface and over lapping the edges by 2-3mm. This adhesive tape is intended to effect permanent operational bonding of the UPS to the underside of the pipe. Again the fitting and storage instructions supplied should be followed.
Type B products are intended for use where the primary objective is to provide an anti galvanic corrosion barrier between the pipe and the pipe rack and where only slight and/or infrequent movement between the pipe and rack is anticipated.

Type C are supplied without any pre-fitted adhesive tape. They are intended to be applied with the client’s choice of two part methacrylate or epoxy adhesive system for the most arduous applications in accordance with the supplied fitting instructions.

Temperature range:
The basic UPS shoe is continuously rated for use at temperatures between –200°C and + 160°C. The adhesive pre-fitted in Type A and Type B is continuously rated from –35°C to +95°C with intermittent excursion to +150°C. For applications in which the pipe temperatures lie outside those of the built in adhesive Type C units should be specified with an appropriately rated adhesive.

Oversize UPS units, of Type A and Type C, up to one pipe size larger than the application pipe may be used without detriment to performance. Type B units should only be used on the designated size of pipe. On no account should undersize UPS units be used on any pipe systems.

No UPS products should be used in shortened form without prior discussion with Atlantic Supports Engineering Ltd. In particular Atlantic Supports Engineering Ltd will take no responsibility for the performance of UPS Type A or Type B that are modified in any way after leaving the factory.

Important:
The above information and advice is based on Atlantic Supports Engineering Ltd’s extensive field and laboratory testing and is supplied in the belief that it is accurate and reliable. Since the conditions of storage and application are outside the control of Atlantic Supports Engineering the user shall determine the suitability of the product for its intended application in accordance with the fitting instructions and assume all risks and liability in connection there with.
